April 12 - 14, 2019: Global Youth Service Days

WHEREAS, Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) is a time to celebrate and create opportunities for all youth ages 5-25 and their communities to thrive by working together for the common good; and,
WHEREAS, Global Youth Service Day, an event organized by Youth Service America, is the largest youth service and civic action event in the world and the only day of service dedicated solely to engaging youth ages 5-25; and,
WHEREAS, in 2019, Global Youth Service Day is being observed for the 31st year in all 50 states and for the 20th year globally in more than 100 countries across all 7 continents; and,
WHEREAS, Highland Park, Michigan, depends on youth as vital community assets and resources, and on their unique knowledge, idealism, skills, perspectives, ideas, and creativity as they lead awareness, service, advocacy, and philanthropy activities; and,
WHEREAS, one-third of the U.S. population (approximately 104,000,000 Americans) and 33.7% of Highland Park residents are under the age of 25; and,
WHEREAS, My Sister’s Keeper and My Brother’s Keeper youth-serving organizations are mobilizing the citizens of the Highland Park and Detroit area to serve their communities on Global Youth Service Day; and,
WHEREAS, My Sister’s Keeper and My Brother’s Keeper youth volunteers are expected to contribute 10,000 hours of service on GYSD (at the national value of volunteer time of $24.69 per hour) worth $246,900 to our communities; and,
WHEREAS, high quality community service and service-learning programs increase young people’s academic engagement and achievement, workforce readiness, 21st century skills, including social, emotional, and behavioral skills, and civic knowledge and engagement; and,
WHEREAS, Global Youth Service Day provides an opportunity for schools, community and faith-based organizations, government agencies, businesses, and families to engage youth as active citizens, community leaders, and problem solvers;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim April 12-14, 2019, to be Global Youth Service Day in Michigan and encourage all citizens of Michigan to serve their communities.
