May 20 - June 5, 2019: Housing Week of Action

WHEREAS, all people should have access to safe, healthy and affordable homes throughout communities across Michigan; and,

 

WHEREAS, Michigan’s 2018 Homeless Management Information System data found that over 65,000 Michiganders experienced homelessness; and,

 

WHEREAS, about 37 percent of Michigan’s owner-occupied housing was built before 1959, with many of them in need of repairs and upgrades; and,

 

WHEREAS, Michigan’s home building industry is not constructing new affordable homes at the same pace as it did during previous periods of economic recovery; and,

 

WHEREAS, there is a shortage of housing alternatives for seniors that consider their incomes and physical needs; and,

 

WHEREAS, about 30 percent of Michigan’s seniors spend over 30 percent of their income on shelter; and,

 

WHEREAS, nearly 560,000 Michigan renter households spend over 30 percent of their incomes on shelter costs; and,

 

WHEREAS, nearly 280,000 Michigan renter households spend over 50 percent of their income on shelter costs; and,

 

WHEREAS, everyone benefits from affordable housing, including the people who reside in these properties, their neighbors, businesses, employers, and the community as a whole; and,

 

WHEREAS, it is important to raise public awareness of the need for more affordable and attainable housing throughout Michigan; and,

 

WHEREAS, this proclamation is supported by the Michigan State Housing Development Authority, Cinnaire, the Community Development Advocates of Detroit (CDAD), the Community Economic Development Association of Michigan (CEDAM), Habitat for Humanity of Michigan, the Michigan Coalition Against Homelessness, Michigan Community Action, the Michigan Housing Council, Michigan League for Public Policy, the Michigan Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), the Michigan Municipal League (MML), and other partners;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 30 – June 5, 2019, as Housing Week of Action in Michigan.
