June 10-16, 2019: Men's Health Week
June 10, 2019
WHEREAS, Michigan ranks 8th in the nation for deaths from heart disease and 15th for cancer deaths, both heart disease and cancer remain leading causes of death for Michigan men; and,
WHEREAS, according to the American Cancer Society, more than 4,500 Michigan men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2019 and close to 1,000 Michigan men will die of prostate cancer this year, even though prostate cancer is 100% curable when found early enough; and,
WHEREAS, men are less likely to visit a doctor and generally pay less attention to their health, as women see a doctor three times more than men according to the Centers for Disease Control; and,
WHEREAS, educating Michigan men and their families about healthy lifestyles, disease prevention and early detection will greatly reduce mortality rates for Michigan men; and,
WHEREAS, for the past 10 years the MIU Men’s Health Foundation has been dedicated to men’s health advocacy and the awareness, education, research, and treatment of prostate cancer and other men’s health related issues; and,
WHEREAS, throughout the year, the MIU Men’s Health Foundation conducts multiple events in Michigan to improve men’s health and address the unmet need for early detection of treatable diseases, access to education, screenings and health care for preventable diseases which cause premature deaths of Michigan men;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim June 10-16, 2019, as Men’s Health Week in Michigan. The week starts with Blue Monday, which promotes men’s health engagement and encourages everyone to support the men in their lives by wearing blue, and ends on Father’s Day with the Run for the Ribbon at the Detroit Zoo where more than 2,000 prostate cancer survivors and their supporters run/walk to support prostate cancer awareness and celebrate the importance of family throughout their health journey. I applaud the MIU Men’s Health Foundation and their hundreds of volunteers for their 10-year dedication to improve the health of all Michigan men.
