September 2019: Pain Awareness Month

WHEREAS, chronic pain is a public health crisis that affects nearly 100 million Americans; and,

 

WHEREAS, pain is the number one reason Americans seek out medical care and is the leading cause of long-term disability; and,

 

WHEREAS, chronic pain costs the nation an estimated $635 billion annually in medical expenses, lost wages, and lost productivity; and,

 

WHEREAS, chronic pain impacts almost every aspect of a person’s life and the lives of the individual’s family members, caregivers, and loved ones; and,

 

WHEREAS, the U.S. Pain Foundation’s mission is to educate, empower, support, and advocate for adults and children with chronic pain and their caregivers; and,

 

WHEREAS, increased awareness about the effects of chronic pain results in better outcomes, increased access to effective pain care, and empowerment and validation for those living with pain;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim September as Pain Awareness Month in Michigan.
