WHEREAS, liver cancer is the sixth leading cause of cancer deaths in Michigan, and deaths from liver cancer continue to rise, with 46 percent increase from 2008 to 2017; and,
WHEREAS, liver cancer has the third lowest survival rate of any type of cancer, with the five-year survival rate being only about 18 percent; and,
WHEREAS, hepatitis B and hepatitis C are both leading causes of liver cancer incidence in the United States, with most people not knowing they have the virus because there are often no symptoms, however it can be prevented through the hepatitis B vaccine; and,
WHEREAS, hepatitis B and hepatitis C are both treatable, and disease prevention and early detection can help lower the risk of liver cancer; and,
WHEREAS, educating Michigan residents about healthy lifestyles can help lower risk of liver cancer, while reduced alcohol consumption will benefit and reduce the possibility of cirrhosis (scarring) of the liver; and,
WHEREAS, this month, we join with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services to raise awareness of liver cancer and the need for early detection of treatable diseases and to promote the importance of vaccination and screenings for preventable diseases;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim October 2019 as Liver Cancer Awareness Month in Michigan.
