WHEREAS, many Michigan citizens cannot afford legal representation to resolve obstacles that affect their basic needs, including family safety, housing, health, and economic security; and,
WHEREAS, members of the legal profession are in a unique position to dramatically enhance the distribution of justice and equality in their communities; and,
WHEREAS, legal professionals throughout Michigan have the capacity, through pro bono legal assistance and financial contributions to support civil legal services, to provide and support the delivery of specialized skills and expert knowledge to low-income Michigan citizens; and,
WHEREAS, we join the State Bar of Michigan to raise awareness of the need for pro bono legal assistance and financial support of civil legal services so all low-income people have access to zero-cost or low-cost legal assistance regardless of their ability to pay and to recognize the legal professionals who volunteer their services and make financial contributions to assist those in need;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim October 2019 as Pro Bono Month in Michigan.
