October 14 - 20, 2019: Pharmacy Week

WHEREAS, pharmacists are medication experts and among the most readily accessible members of the health care team, helping the public receive professional guidance in the safe and effective use of prescription and over-the-counter medications; and,

WHEREAS, pharmacy professionals play a critical role in maintaining and improving the health of Michigan’s residents. They provide professional services and education which help patients receive the most benefit from their medications as well as reduce health care costs; and,

WHEREAS, the demand for pharmaceutical services continues to rise due to many patients taking multiple medications, more medications being available without a prescription, and the state’s population gradually aging; and,

WHEREAS, through education and experience, a pharmacist improves patients’ health by encouraging medication adherence, enhancing patient therapy, and detecting as well as preventing dangerous medication interactions; and,

WHEREAS, pharmacists empower patients to be proactive with their health by offering general health screenings for blood pressure and cholesterol levels, diabetes and other conditions, as well as providing vital immunizations to keep patients healthy and safe;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim October 14-20, 2019, as Pharmacy Week in Michigan.
