October 24 - October 31, 2019: Bat Week
October 24, 2019
WHEREAS, bats provide important ecological services that contribute substantially to the economy of our state and nation by protecting forests and agriculture from crop-damaging insect pests; and,
WHEREAS, recent bat population losses from white-nose syndrome and other factors require attention to ensure the sustainability of our food production systems and to protect environmental and human health; and,
WHEREAS, it is critically important to continue federal and state efforts, including developing new public-private partnerships and increasing citizen engagement, to promote the health of bat populations, to increase the quality and quantity of bat roosting and foraging habitat, and to help restore bat populations to healthy levels; and,
WHEREAS, during this week, we should recognize the many benefits bats provide to our economy and environment and the vital significance of protecting the health of bat populations;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim October 24-31, 2019, as Bat Week in Michigan.
