November 2019: Curing Stomach Cancer Month

WHEREAS, stomach cancer only has a 32 percent five-year survival rate; and,
WHEREAS, 27,510 new cases are diagnosed each year in the United States and 11,140 will die every year; and,
WHEREAS, one-third of stomach cancers are diagnosed at stage IV, which only has a 5 percent five-year survival rate; and,
WHEREAS, in the United States, it is estimated that more than 88,563 people are currently living with stomach cancer; and,
WHEREAS, stomach cancer has increased in young white adults ages 25 to 39 by 2.7 percent per year for the last 30 years; and,
WHEREAS, stomach cancer mortality rates have declined by 50 percent over the past 30 years; and,
WHEREAS, Debbie’s Dream Foundation: Curing Stomach Cancer is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness about stomach cancer, advancing funding for research, and providing education and support internationally to patients, families, and caregivers, while pursuing the ultimate goal of making the cure for stomach cancer a reality;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim November 2019 as Curing Stomach Cancer Month in Michigan.
