WHEREAS, long-term care consists of a variety of medical and non-medical services to help meet the health or personal needs of ill, disabled or elderly citizens; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan’s Medicaid program covers long-term care benefits including nursing facility services, home and community-based waiver services, personal care services, private duty nursing, home therapy services, the Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly, and hospice; and,
WHEREAS, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, citizens age 60 and older represent nearly 25 percent of Michigan’s total population and are the fastest-growing age group in Michigan, furthermore, those age 75 and older will double by 2040 and fuel an unprecedented need for long-term supports and services; and,
WHEREAS, 1.3 million adults in Michigan are caring for family members needing long-term care; and,
WHEREAS, as Michigan’s aging population grows at an unprecedented rate and continues to live longer than at any time in our history, we raise awareness surrounding long-term care in Michigan and encourage citizens to recognize the importance of planning for future health care needs;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim November 2019 as Long-Term Care Awareness Month in Michigan.
