WHEREAS, according to Amphibian Ark and a joint effort of organizations including the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Species Survival Commission (SSC) Conservation Planning Specialist Group, the IUCN SSC Amphibian Specialist Group, and the Amphibian Survival Alliance, 30% (1,895) of 6,285 amphibian species assessed by the IUCN are threatened with extinction; and,
WHEREAS, 6% (382) are known to be near threatened and 3,900 species are at risk of extinction; and,
WHEREAS, 165 amphibian species are believed to have already gone extinct, including 39 known to be gone or extinct in the wild, but still survives in captivity, and 130 are not found in recent years and are possibly extinct; and,
WHEREAS, during this week, we must make efforts to protect the lives of Michigan amphibians by raising awareness and encouraging citizens to clean up and help sustain Michigan's wetlands;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim November 4-11, 2019, as Amphibian Conservation Awareness Week in Michigan and encourage residents to reflect on the ongoing struggle for amphibian conservation and celebrate the contributions that enhance our state’s wetlands.
