November 23 - December 1, 2019: Football Week

WHEREAS, football is one of the most popular spectator sports in Michigan and the largest participation sport at the high school and collegiate levels; and,
WHEREAS, on any given fall weekend, approximately 700 games are played by 1,400 teams and attended by as many as half a million fans; and,
WHEREAS, professional football has a proud tradition in our state, featuring a long-standing Thanksgiving Day game hosted by the Detroit Lions; and,
WHEREAS, the closing days of November are annually highlighted by the Motor City’s holiday game, spectacular collegiate rivalry games, and three days of contests to determine the top high school teams; and,
WHEREAS, during this week, we acknowledge the positive role football plays in schools and communities across the state;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim November 23 – December 1, 2019, as Football Week in Michigan.
