December 2 - 6, 2019: Older Driver Safety Awareness Week

WHEREAS, Michigan now has 1.5 million drivers 65 years old or older, and that number is quickly growing, with one in five drivers expected to be 65 or older by 2025; and,  

 

WHEREAS, as one’s age increases, changes in physical, mental or sensory abilities may challenge a person’s continued ability to drive safely; and,

 

WHEREAS, training, programs, and resources are being strategically implemented to support aging adults, as well as the family, friends, and professionals who work with aging adults; and,

 

WHEREAS, Safe Drivers Smart Options is an award winning, statewide public-private partnership that works to support the safe transportation of Michigan’s aging adults; and,

 

WHEREAS, Safe Drivers Smart Options helps those who are able to drive safely continue to do so; and,

 

WHEREAS, Safe Drivers Smart Options helps those who are starting to have difficulties with driving transition from driving to non-driving and supports the use of community mobility options for those who no longer drive; and,

 

WHEREAS, Michigan is committed to improving safe mobility throughout people’s lives and continues to address and bring awareness to these challenges and work towards improving the safety of driving for all;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim December 2-6, 2019, as Older Driver Safety Awareness Week in Michigan.
