February 16, 2020: Lithuanian Independence Day

WHEREAS, the state of Michigan is pleased to join Lithuanian-Americans throughout Michigan in recognizing February 16, 2020, as Lithuanian Independence Day; and,
WHEREAS, on February 16, 1918, the restoration of an independent state of Lithuania, governed by democratic principles, was proclaimed with the signing of the February 16th Act of Independence; and,
WHEREAS, this year, we celebrate the 101st independence anniversary of Lithuania; and,
WHEREAS, still today, Michigan’s Lithuanian-American citizens continue to contribute greatly to the rich heritage and culture fostered in our great state;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim February 16, 2020, as Lithuanian Independence Day in Michigan.
