March 15 - 21, 2020: Surveyors Week

WHEREAS, since the earliest days of civilization, people have depended on surveyors to resolve questions of land boundaries and provide the framework for the building of infrastructure; and,

 

WHEREAS, since the colonial era, surveyors have been community leaders, statesmen, influential citizens, and presidents of our nation, including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Abraham Lincoln; and,

 

WHEREAS, surveyors determine essential measurements, relative positions of physical or cultural details above, on, or beneath the surface of the earth; and,

 

WHEREAS, the role of the professional surveyor has been, and continues to be, integral to the development and advancement of our state and nation; and,

 

WHEREAS, Surveyors Week is an opportunity to recognize the historic contributions of surveying and appreciate the new technologies that are constantly modernizing the profession; and,

 

WHEREAS, the State of Michigan is proud to recognize the dedicated men and women of this profession;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim March 15-21, 2020, as Surveyors Week in Michigan.
