May 3 - 9, 2020: Correctional Officers Week

WHEREAS, the safety and well-being of every Michigander is of utmost importance, and the correctional officers who work in our correctional facilities have dedicate themselves to this critical task each and every day; and,

WHEREAS, correctional officers are skilled professionals who are trained to maintain composure while preserving the safety of individuals as well as protecting persons who may be dangerous to themselves or others; and,

WHEREAS, these honorable men and women are hard-working and committed public servants, and, without their expertise and service, Michigan’s correctional facilities would be unable to operate successfully and efficiently; and,

WHEREAS, in midst of the current COVID-19 pandemic, correctional officers are putting their lives on the frontline to maintain the safety of our correctional facilities and to ensure the health and well-being of those incarcerated, while protecting our communities; and,

WHEREAS, during this week, we join with the Michigan Corrections Organization to recognize every correctional officer who serves in Michigan and thank them for the essential role they play in helping to protect the people of Michigan;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 3-9, 2020, as Correctional Officers Week in Michigan.
