May 6 - 12, 2020: Nurses Week
May 06, 2020
WHEREAS, nurses comprise the largest portion of health care professionals who provide direct and highly skilled care to people of every age; and,
WHEREAS, nurses complete rigorous education programs to prepare for treating and caring for sick and injured people in complex and demanding environments; and,
WHEREAS, the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has severely upended our health care system and sadly claimed the lives of many Michigan residents, including nurses, but it has not changed nurses’ dedication and determination to providing quality care for patients often under unimaginable and extreme circumstances; and,
WHEREAS, nurses are not only caring for the sickest patients, but also putting their lives on the line to care for COVID-19 patients, fearing they may infect other patients or even their own family members due to limited equipment and resources during this unprecedented pandemic; and,
WHEREAS, advocating for their patients at their bedsides, nurses’ voices are critical in improving safety standards and access to health care so everyone can continue to live safe, healthy, and productive lives;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 6-12, 2020, as Nurses Week in Michigan to express our deepest respect and gratitude for their life-saving work and protecting people from illness and injury. We honor nurses’ work and their dedication for caring for others in Michigan throughout the nation and the world.
