Wheat Month: July 2020

WHEREAS, wheat production is a $249 million annual industry in the State of Michigan, producing approximately 36 million bushels of wheat on just over 500,000 acres; and,
WHEREAS, wheat is being grown on nearly 5,000 farms on both peninsulas and in at least 78 counties; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan-grown soft winter red and white wheat have a bright future as an ingredient in many food products including breakfast cereal and pastries, cakes and baking mixes, cookies, pretzels, pies, wheat berries (kernels), soups, and crackers, and is a preferred ingredient by many commercial food manufacturers; and,
WHEREAS, during this month, we join with the Michigan Wheat Program in celebrating the importance of Michigan’s wheat farmers and all of the millers, food companies, and businesses that utilize the bountiful wheat crop, as they support and collaborate with the 5,000 wheat farmers in Michigan;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim July 2020 as Wheat Month in Michigan.
