October 2020: Apple Month

WHEREAS, Michigan is known for our incredible agriculture industry that produces many apples throughout the fall; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan is the third largest apple producing state in the nation, which adds value to Michigan’s economy as a whole; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan’s apple growers will harvest an estimated 946 million pounds of apples in 2020; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan has over 14.9 million apple trees in commercial production, covering 34,500 acres on 775 family-run farms; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan apple growers produce more than 16 varieties of apples, available at grocery stores, supermarkets, farm markets, cider mills, and U-pick operations; and,
WHEREAS, eating apples regularly can contribute to good health and reduce the risk of diseases;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim October 2020 as Apple Month in Michigan.
