November 27, 2020: Post Office Day

WHEREAS, the United States Postal Service was developed at the Second Continental Congress on July 26, 1775, which established the “United States Post Office” and named Benjamin Franklin as the first postmaster general; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Postal Reorganization Act of 1970 (a direct result of the 1970 strike) states that “The United States Postal Service shall be operated as a basic and fundamental service provided to the people by the government of the United States, authorized by the Constitution, created by an Act of Congress, and supported by the people”; and,

 

WHEREAS, the United States Postal Service is an independent, quasi-governmental agency which delivers mail to Michiganders on a daily basis and holds a favorable rating from the vast majority of citizens; and,

 

WHEREAS, the United States Postal Service’s diverse workforce is comprised of nearly 20% Veterans, 44.61% women, and 40.28% people of color; and,

 

WHEREAS, the holiday season from Thanksgiving to the New Year is traditionally the busiest time of the year for letter, card, and package delivery  for those across the state, country, and overseas;

 

WHEREAS, this year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the role of the United States Postal Service has been more important than ever, as it delivers lifesaving prescription medications, information about health and finances, election mail and ballots, and other necessities, while allowing people to stay safe at home;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim November 27, 2020, as Post Office Day in Michigan.
