June 14, 2020: Destroyer Escort Day

WHEREAS, destroyer escorts were a special classification of smaller and lightly armed warships designed to accompany convoys of United States Merchant Marine ships during World War II; and,
WHEREAS, destroyer escorts are remembered as some of the most versatile and useful ships in warship history; and,
WHEREAS, sailors serving on destroyer escorts were entrusted to protect supplies and troop transport ships, willingly risking their lives to defend the United States from enemy ships; and,
WHEREAS, we join with the Michigan chapter of the Destroyer Escort Sailors Association Inc. to honor and remember the shipmates who bravely served our nation aboard destroyer escorts during World War II;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim June 14, 2020, as Destroyer Escort Day in Michigan.
