February 1-7, 2021: Enrolled Agent Week

WHEREAS, the enrolled agent profession dates back to 1884 when, after questionable claims had been presented for Civil War losses, Congress acted to regulate persons who represented citizens in their dealings with the U.S. Treasury Department; and,

 

WHEREAS, enrolled agents have been an important asset to the Michigan taxpayers, helping over 500,000 taxpayers in Michigan with their tax issues; and,

 

WHEREAS, enrolled agents assist taxpayers with issues from the annual compliance filing of their tax return to more complex issues of audit, liens, levy, appeals, and collections; and,

 

WHEREAS, enrolled agents have earned the privilege of representing taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service by either passing a comprehensive IRS test covering individual and business tax returns, or through past technical experience as a former IRS employee. Enrolled agent status is the highest credential the IRS awards. Individuals who obtain this status must adhere to ethical standards and complete 72 hours of continuing education courses every three years;

 

THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim February 1-7, 2021, as Enrolled Agent Week in Michigan.
