March 1-7, 2021: Weights and Measures Week

WHEREAS, the Weights and Measures Program of the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development's Laboratory Division serves to meet the public need of standard weights and measures in the State of Michigan; and,

 

WHEREAS, Weights and Measures activities have an estimated impact of over $170 billion in the State of Michigan annually; and,

 

WHEREAS, the employees of the Weights and Measures Program are responsible for ensuring that all weighing and measuring devices used in commerce are accurate in design and operation; and,

 

WHEREAS, with growing awareness of consumers' need for accurate measurement, clear labeling of products has become a necessity for anyone trying to make an informed purchasing decision; and,

 

WHEREAS, with an increased need to protect businesses from unfair trade practices, there must be assurance that standards used in manufacturing and commerce accurately reflect national and international standards; and,

 

WHEREAS, this year, the National Conference on Weights and Measures' theme is "Measuring Up to the New Normal"; and,

 

WHEREAS, each year, the first week in March is set aside to commemorate the enactment of our nation's first Weights and Measures Law in 1799 and to increase public awareness of the importance of this law;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim March 1-7, 2021, as Weights and Measures Week in Michigan.
