WHEREAS, school districts around the nation will celebrate National School Breakfast Week from March 8-12, 2021; and,
WHEREAS, the 2021 theme for National School Breakfast Week, "Score Big with School Breakfast," presents an opportunity to remind parents and stakeholders that a healthy school breakfast helps ensure students' academic success in school, so they can "score big" and reach their goals; and,
WHEREAS, research shows that children who eat breakfast are more likely to reach higher levels of achievement in reading and mathematics, perform better on assessments, have increased concentration, and maintain a healthy weight; and,
WHEREAS, the National School Breakfast Program has been joined throughout the years by many programs to ensure that every child is fed, and there is evidence of the need for nutritional education and awareness of the value of school nutrition programs; and,
WHEREAS, ever since the program received permanent authorization in 1975, it has provided nearly 12.4 million low-income children with a nutritious morning meal each school day; and,
WHEREAS, during the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been continued efforts to ensure proper student nutrient intake and household food security, including the reopening of the Pandemic-EBT program that provides food to children who are eligible for free or reduced-price meals at school, increased funding for the 10 Cents a Meal Program for schools statewide, and services from the United States Department of Agriculture, School Food Authorities, and other community organizations that have provided students with meals to take home; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan's State Board of Education continues to recognize the commitment of the National School Breakfast Program in providing school breakfasts to our children and ensuring the health and well-being of the future leaders of our state;
