March 8, 2021: International Women's Day

WHEREAS, International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women's equality right here in our great state of Michigan; and,

 

WHEREAS, International Women's Day is a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change, and to celebrate acts of courage by women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their communities; and,

 

WHEREAS, International Women's Day has been celebrated for over a century with the first gathering held in 1911; and,

 

WHEREAS, the campaign theme for International Women's Day 2021 is "#ChooseToChallenge: A challenged world is an alert world and from challenge comes change;" and,  

 

WHEREAS, International Women's Day is an opportunity to acknowledge and amplify the progress made to advance women's equality, to expand opportunities for women in society, and to encourage and mobilize all people to bring about positive change;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Governor Gretchen Whitmer, do hereby proclaim March 8, 2021, as International Women's day in Michigan.
