WHEREAS, the Tamil language is recognized as one of the longest-surviving classical languages in the world and is spoken by over 74 million people all around the world; and,
WHEREAS, the Tamil community of Michigan has made significant contributions to our state's diverse culture and population, including preserving and promoting the rich heritage of the Tamil language and culture by establishing Michigan Tamil Sangam in 1975; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan Tamil Sangam established Tamil Schools to educate children and preserve Tamil language for generations to come; and,
WHEREAS, Tamil traditions, language, and heritage have impacted many aspects of the economic, social, and cultural history of our state and nation; and,
WHEREAS, on the 14th day in the month of April, members of the Tamil community celebrate "Chithirai Thirunaal," a festival that coincides with the start of the month "Chithirai" in the Tamil calendar; and,
WHEREAS, the State of Michigan joins in celebrating "Chithirai Thirunaal" and in recognizing the Michigan Tamil community for their ongoing contributions to our state;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim April 2021 as Tamil Language and Culture Month in Michigan.
