May 2021: Water Safety Month

WHEREAS, residents of Michigan recognize the vital role swimming and aquatic-related activities play in promoting good physical and mental health and enhancing the quality of life for all people; and,

 

WHEREAS, residents of Michigan understand the essential role that water safety plays in preventing drownings and recreational water-related injuries, including the importance of appropriately wearing a U.S. Coast Guard approved life jacket; and,

 

WHEREAS, there have been many contributions made by the recreational water industry and those supporting outdoor recreation throughout the state, as represented by the organizations involved in the National Water Safety Month Coalition, in developing safe swimming facilities, aquatic programs, home pools and spas, and related activities, as well as providing healthy places to learn, grow, and build a self-esteem , which contributes to the quality of life in our communities; and,

 

WHEREAS, the effort and commitment is ongoing to educate the public on water safety in and around natural bodies of water and other areas such as pools and spas, by means of water safety initiatives by the pool, spa, waterpark, recreation and parks industries and state agencies; and,

 

WHEREAS, it is vitally important to communicate water safety rules and programs to families and individuals of all ages, including owners of private pools and visitors to public swimming facilities, natural bodies of water and waterparks;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of the state of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 2021 as Water Safety Month in Michigan.
