June 23, 2021: Detroit-style Pizza Day

WHEREAS, Detroit-style pizza is a rectangular pizza with a thick crispy crust that was first developed in 1946 at Buddy's Rendezvous in Detroit, now known as Buddy's Pizza; and,
WHEREAS, Buddy's owner Gus Guerra took a Sicilian-style pizza recipe with thick crust and adapted it by gently pressing dough into rectangular blue steel pans used by automotive workers; and,
WHEREAS, since then, Detroit-style pizza has become one of Detroit's iconic local foods and has spread to other parts of the United States; and,
WHEREAS, now, it is one of the most popular food trends across the nation and is beloved by young and old alike; and,
WHEREAS, in 2011, Detroit Mayor Dave Bing and city council declared June 23rd to be Buddy's Pizza Day in Detroit to credit Buddy's Pizza for putting Detroit on the culinary map and showcasing the city's innovation; and,
WHEREAS, on this day, we celebrate the history, style, and the roots of Detroit-style pizza and appreciate the taste of this unique and delicious food;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim June 23, 2021 as Detroit-style Pizza Day in Michigan and encourage everyone to grab a bite of this savory delicacy.
