September 30, 2021: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Awareness Day

WHEREAS, in 2019, 8,346 babies were admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU); and,
WHEREAS, families with babies in the NICU often struggle to find resources, support, and education; and,
WHEREAS, funding for research related to greater understanding and prevention of conditions that lead to NICU admissions, as well as holistic care of families with babies in the NICU, is vital; and,
WHEREAS, NICU Awareness Day provides an opportunity for families, whose lives have been affected by admissions to the NICU, to share their stories, honor dedicated health care professionals, and meet other families with similar stories; and,
WHEREAS, the establishment of NICU Awareness Day also provides opportunities for advocacy and increased visibility of conditions that often lead to NICU admissions, the needs of families with babies in the NICU, and interventions that improve the quality of life for babies admitted to the NICU, NICU graduates and their families; and,
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim September 30, 2021, as Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Awareness Day in Michigan.
