October 2021: Apple Month

WHEREAS, Michigan is known for our incredible agriculture industry that produces many apples throughout the fall; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan is the third-largest producing state of apples in the nation, with this fruit crop adding value to Michigan's economy as a whole; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan's apple growers will harvest an estimated 766.5 million pounds estimated harvest for 2021; and,
WHEREAS, as of 2021, 14.9 million apple trees are in commercial production, covering 34,500 acres on 775 family-run farms in Michigan; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan apple growers produce more than 16 varieties of apples, available in grocery stores, supermarkets, farm markets, cider mills, and U-picks; and,
WHEREAS, eating Michigan apples regularly can contribute to good health and reduce the risk of diseases; and,
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim October 2021 as Michigan Apple Month.
