November 2021: Adoption Month

WHEREAS, approximately 11,000 children in Michigan live away from their parents in foster care, and every year, an estimated 2,400 children in foster care throughout Michigan have the goal of adoption and are legally ready to be adopted; and,

 

WHEREAS, during fiscal year 2021, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and contracted private agency partners provided permanency to approximately 1,650 children in Michigan through adoption; and,

 

WHEREAS, the State of Michigan and the Michigan Department of Health and Human remains committed to supporting and serving the needs of children and families who have adopted in Michigan; and,

 

WHEREAS, during this month, we join with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, Michigan courts and various adoption agencies throughout the state to raise awareness of adoption and the benefits of adoption for children;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim November 2021 as Adoption Month in Michigan.
