April 27, 2022: Stop Food Waste Day

WHEREAS, 40 percent of food produced is never eaten in the United States, contributing to more than eight percent of the total global greenhouse gas emissions; and,

WHEREAS, food waste is a vastly overlooked driver of climate change; and,

WHEREAS, reducing food waste is one of the most important things we can do to reverse global warming; and,

WHEREAS, reducing food waste represents one of the greatest possibilities for individuals, companies, and communities to contribute to reverse global warming, and at the same time feed more people, increase economic benefits, and preserve threatened eco-systems; and,

WHEREAS, the State of Michigan is positioned as a global leader in sustainability working to reduce its impact on the planet; and,

WHEREAS, creating awareness around the epidemic is a key component in fighting food waste;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim April 27, 2022, as Stop Food Waste Day in Michigan.
