June 30, 2022: Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita Awareness Day

WHEREAS, Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita (AMC) refers to a nonprogressive condition in which multiple joint contractures are present at birth and the affected joints become fixed, limiting mobility and resulting in the weakening of surrounding muscles; and,

WHEREAS, AMC is thought to be a consequence of decreased fetal movement in the womb; and,

WHEREAS, although any joint can be involved, newborns with AMC often have contractures in joints of the arms and legs, and the number of affected joints and severity vary greatly from person to person and are dependent on the underlying cause; and,

WHEREAS, approximately one in 3,000 babies are born with AMC in the United States, and around 20-30% of babies born with AMC will die in the newborn period due to a lethal genetic type or have severe central nervous system dysfunction; and,

WHEREAS, AMC is not a specific diagnosis but a symptom that can be associated with many different medical conditions; and,

WHEREAS, there are over 300 types of AMC, some of which can affect other body systems; amyoplasia is the most common type of AMC, which is a sporadic condition characterized by contractures and muscle weakness involving all four limbs; and,

WHEREAS, AMC is a treatable condition, as interventions such as physical therapy, splinting, orthopedic surgery, and exercise are aimed at improving range of motion and fostering independence; and,

WHEREAS, this day is designated to raise awareness of AMC, provide support to those who are suffering from this condition, and promote more research to improve treatment;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim June 30, 2022 as Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita Awareness Day in Michigan.
