July 2022: Arachnoiditis Awareness Month
July 01, 2022
WHEREAS, arachnoiditis is a debilitating condition characterized by severe stinging and burning pain and neurologic problems; and,
WHEREAS, arachnoiditis is caused by inflammation of the arachnoid, one of the membranes that protect the nerves of the spinal cord; and can be triggered by spinal cord injury, infection, or spinal nerve compression; and,
WHEREAS, the most common symptom of arachnoiditis is chronic pain; symptoms may become severe and even permanent as the disease progresses, and many are unable to work and have significant disability due to chronic pain; and,
WHEREAS, prevention of this injury is paramount and early diagnosis and intervention is crucial. Correct aggressive treatment by qualified medical professional can lead to improved outcomes before arachnoiditis progresses and treatment becomes increasingly difficult; and,
WHEREAS, the prevalence of arachnoiditis appears to be increasing due to increased lumbar spine surgeries, and it is an incurable disease that is challenging to treat, it is important to increase the awareness, recognition, and reporting of this condition by healthcare professionals;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim July 2022 as Arachnoiditis Awareness Month in Michigan.
