August 14-20, 2022: Charitable Nonprofit Week

WHEREAS, Michigan’s nonprofit sector is a strong economic force that employs approximately 470,000 residents, or nearly 11% of Michigan’s workforce, and generates billions each year in overall economic activity, contributing significantly to the state’s economy and to the quality of life of Michiganders; and,

WHEREAS, the more than 50,000 nonprofits in the state are committed to the values of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice as evidenced by their serving the educational, cultural, civic, health, religious, human services, recreational, philanthropic, and environmental needs of our state; and,

WHEREAS, the charitable nonprofit sector is the backbone of our communities. As trusted members of communities, they serve through good times and bad, most recently supporting Michigan’s recovery from the economic and public health impacts of the coronavirus pandemic; and,

WHEREAS, when nonprofits and governments collaborate, everyone wins. Collaboration can cut costs, improve services, and return greater value to taxpayers while uplifting our communities; and,

WHEREAS, the missions of charitable nonprofit organizations are supported and enhanced by the Michigan Nonprofit Association, Council of Michigan Foundations, Michigan Association of United Ways, and the Michigan Community Service Commission and their partners; and,

WHEREAS, during this week we raise awareness of the critical role of charitable nonprofits to the strength and vitality of Michigan’s communities;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim August 14-20, 2022, as Charitable Nonprofit Week in Michigan.
