October 12, 2022: Walk and Roll to School Day

WHEREAS, on October 12, 2022, thousands of students across Michigan will participate in a nation-wide celebration of walking, health, and alternative modes of transportation as they walk or roll their way to school; and,

WHEREAS, October is International Walk to School Month. In conjunction with this designation, schools across Michigan work to encourage and educate students to use active transportation methods that inspire them to become lifelong bicyclists and safe road users; and,

WHEREAS, walking to school, work, and for leisure has a positive impact on health, wellness, and the environment. In general, students that use active transportation methods are healthier and more attentive, traffic is less congested, and busing costs are reduced in schools that encourage active transportation methods by participating in Safe Routes to School programs; and,

WHEREAS, Walk and Roll to School Day is supported by the Michigan Department of Transportation, Michigan Fitness Foundation, schools, communities, and nonprofit organizations statewide;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim October 12, 2022, as Walk and Roll to School Day in Michigan, and encourage everyone to consider the safety and health of children today and every day.
