November 2022: Curing Stomach Cancer Month

WHEREAS, stomach cancer is among the cancers with the lowest five-year survival rates, at 33% overall; and,

WHEREAS, it is estimated that 26,380 new stomach cancer cases will be diagnosed and 11,090 deaths due to stomach cancer will occur this year in the United States; and,

WHEREAS, a third of stomach cancers are diagnosed at stage IV which only has a 6% five-year survival rate; and,

WHEREAS, in the United States it is estimated that more than 123,920 people are currently living with stomach cancer; and,

WHEREAS, stomach cancer continues to be one of the leading causes of cancer related death worldwide; and,

WHEREAS, Debbie’s Dream Foundation: Curing Stomach Cancer is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness about stomach cancer, advancing funding for research, and providing education and support internationally to patients, families, and caregivers, while pursuing the ultimate goal of making the cure for stomach cancer a reality; and,

WHEREAS, during this month, we encourage residents to spread awareness about stomach cancer in hopes we find a cure;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim November 2022 as Curing Stomach Cancer Month.
