November 2022: Veteran Caregivers Month
November 01, 2022
WHEREAS, Michigan is home to more than 550,000 veterans and their families; and,
WHEREAS, paying tribute to the people who care for veterans in Michigan is an important part of supporting troops and military families; but for some, it’s also about recognizing the work they do that qualifies them as caregivers even if they don’t think of themselves that way; and,
WHEREAS, often caregivers are relatives of the wounded veteran; however, sometimes friends, neighbors, and co-workers take on the responsibility as well; and,
WHEREAS, this November is an opportunity to raise awareness for both wounded veterans and those who care for them; and,
WHEREAS, the contributions and sacrifices of the veterans who served in the armed forces have been vital in maintaining our freedoms and way of life; our veterans are brave and selfless individuals who, when duty called, willingly put themselves in harm's way to defend the lives and liberty of others; and,
WHEREAS, while the opportunity to provide care to a loved one can be a blessing and a source of connection, it often requires sacrifice; thousands of Michiganders have sacrificed jobs and altered careers to perform caregiving duties; and,
WHEREAS, this heroic work is often done while caregivers balance other commitments to their families, jobs, and communities; as these remarkable individuals put their own lives on hold to tend to their family members, it is our responsibility to ensure they do not have to do it alone; and,
WHEREAS, our veteran caregivers exemplify the heroism found not only on the fields of battle, but also in the hearts of those who tend to our wounded warriors when they come home; and,
WHEREAS, we recognize and honor Michigan’s veteran caregivers who support our armed forces;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim November 2022 as Veteran Caregivers Month in Michigan.
