January 1-7, 2023: Rivalry Week

WHEREAS, The University of Michigan and Michigan State University basketball teams have met 190 times since 1909; and,

WHEREAS, The University of Michigan currently leads the head-to-head series 96-87, although Michigan State leads since joining the Big 10 in 1950; and,

WHEREAS, on the banks of the Red Cedar, at 2:30 pm Eastern Standard Time on Saturday, January 7th, the two teams tip off for the 191st time; and,

WHEREAS, the Wolverines hold the longest win streak in this series of 12 games from 1921-1927; and,

WHEREAS, the Spartan teams have won 6 of the last 10 matchups; and,

WHEREAS, the Wolverines haven’t won in the Izzone since 2018; and, 

WHEREAS, during this week, we encourage all Michiganders to embrace this historic rivalry and the high stakes this game surely represents for every family, but especially the houses divided;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim January 1-7 as Rivalry Week in Michigan.
