March 6-10, 2023: School Breakfast Week

WHEREAS, school districts around the nation will celebrate National School Breakfast Week from March 6 - 10, 2023; and,

WHEREAS, the National School Breakfast Program was permanently established in 1975 to provide low-income children in public and non-profit private schools and residential childcare institutions with a nutritious morning meal each school day, and in 1989 the National School Breakfast Week was launched to raise the awareness of the availability of school breakfast meals; and,

WHEREAS, the 2023 theme for National School Breakfast Week, “Dig Into School Breakfast,” presents an opportunity to remind parents and the entire community that school breakfast supports building healthy lifelong eating habits and provides a nutritious and energizing start to the day for students, helping to ensure academic success so students can “dig in” and meet their goals; and,

WHEREAS, research shows that children who eat breakfast are more likely to reach higher levels of achievement in reading and mathematics, perform better on assessments, have increased memory and concentration, and maintain a healthy weight; and,

WHEREAS, promoting the School Breakfast Program supports Michigan’s Top 10 Strategic Education Plan Goal 3: Improve the health, safety, and wellness of all learners; and,

WHEREAS, more than 70,000,000 school breakfasts were served to students in the previous school year free of charge by school nutrition professionals who worked relentlessly to improve the health and wellness of learners while helping to ensure food security for all students; and, 

WHEREAS, the Michigan Department of Education, Office of Health and Nutrition Services, supports all school food service programs, including the School Breakfast Program, ensuring the health and well-being of the future leaders of our state;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim March 6 – 10, 2023, as School Breakfast Week in Michigan. Let us recognize the dedicated school nutrition professionals who make School Breakfast Week a reality in their schools. Dig in!
