WHEREAS, April 6, 2023, is Opening Day at Comerica Park as the Detroit Tigers take on the Tampa Bay Rays in the first home game of the season; and,
WHEREAS, baseball is America’s favorite pastime; and,
WHEREAS, the Detroit Tigers are beloved by Michiganders throughout the state, and bring particular pride to the City of Detroit; and,
WHEREAS, today, the Detroit Tigers begin their 122nd season as part of Major League Baseball; and,
WHEREAS, the first ever Opening Day for the Tigers was on April 24, 1901; and,
WHEREAS, the Tigers have called Comerica Park home since April 11, 2000, when they defeated the Seattle Mariners 5 – 2; and,
WHEREAS, this year, the Tigers, led by manager A.J. Hinch, hope to improve their all-time Opening Day record to 58 – 60; and,
WHEREAS, Tigers fans will eagerly tune in as we prepare to say goodbye to Miguel “Miggy” Cabrera as he begins his farewell season; and,
WHEREAS, the Tigers have won four World Series, winning their most recent in 1984; and,
WHEREAS, Michiganders are excited to kick off another season of Detroit Tigers baseball and root for a return to the World Series;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim April 6, 2023, as Opening Day in Michigan.
