May 2023: Jewish American Heritage Month

WHEREAS, since the first Jewish immigrants arrived in the United States in the 16th century, Jewish people have been instrumental in the prosperity our state and nation; and,

WHEREAS, Jewish American Heritage Month was first recognized nationally by President George W. Bush in 2006, and has been reaffirmed in the following years; and,

WHEREAS, Michigan has a vibrant Jewish population who make significant contributions in government, countless industries, and the arts; and,

WHEREAS, throughout their rich history, Jewish Americans have worked to improve the conditions of marginalized groups across the nation, including during the Civil Rights Movement; and,

WHEREAS, this year, we also join in celebration of the 75th anniversary of the State of Israel’s founding; and,

WHEREAS, during this month, I encourage all Michiganders to seek out ways to engage with Jewish history, including museum exhibits, literary works, and more; and,

WHEREAS, the principles of diversity and inclusion make our state stronger; and, 

WHEREAS, discrimination of any kind, including antisemitism, are unacceptable in Michigan and the United States; and, 

WHEREAS, during this month, let us celebrate the many contributions Jewish people continue to make in Michigan and throughout the United States;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 2023 as Jewish American Heritage Month in Michigan.
