October 4, 2023: Walk and Roll to School Day
October 04, 2023
WHEREAS, on October 4, 2023, thousands of students across Michigan will participate in a nationwide celebration of walking, health, and alternative modes of transportation as they walk or roll their way to school; and
WHEREAS, October is International Walk to School Month. In conjunction with this designation, schools across Michigan work to encourage and educate students to use active transportation methods that inspire them to become lifelong bicyclists and safe road users; and,
WHEREAS, walking to school, work, and for leisure has a positive impact on health, wellness, and the environment. In general, students who use active transportation methods are healthier and more attentive, traffic is less congested, and busing costs are reduced in schools that encourage active transportation methods by participating in Safe Routes to School programs; and,
WHEREAS, for the safety of our children, motorists need to be aware of, and respectful to, students who walk or bicycle to and from school; and,
WHEREAS, National Walk and Roll to School Day is supported by the Michigan Department of Transportation, Michigan Department of Education, Michigan Fitness Foundation, schools, communities, and nonprofit organizations statewide;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim October 4, 2023, as Walk and Roll to School Day in Michigan, and encourage everyone to consider the safety and health of children today and every day.
