WHEREAS, Susan B. Anthony was a notable suffragette who fought to secure the right to vote for women across our country; and,
WHEREAS, Susan B. Anthony’s legacy inspires future generations of young women to serve their communities; and,
WHEREAS,in 1976 the first Susan B. Anthony birthday celebration was held in Jackson, Michigan, sponsored by the Jackson Women’s History Council; and,
WHEREAS, the Jackson Women’s History Council established an award in Susan B. Anthony’s name to recognize her legacy, and to celebrate the contemporary achievements of men and women in the Jackson area; and,
WHEREAS, fourteen women were recognized as Susan B. Anthony award recipients at the first celebration in 1977; and,
WHEREAS, since that time over 200 deserving women and several deserving men have been selected to receive the Susan B. Anthony award and the Emerging Leader award; and numerous scholarships have been granted to Jackson County high school and college students; and,
WHEREAS, this celebration is during Women’s History Month, on March 8, 2024;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim March 8, 2024, as Susan B. Anthony Day in Michigan.
