April 2024: Tamil Language and Heritage Month

WHEREAS, the Tamil language is recognized as one of the longest-surviving classical languages in the world and is spoken by more than 74 million people throughout the world; and,

WHEREAS, the Tamil language dates back 3,200 years based on recent archeological findings of Tamilnadu’s Porunai civilization; and,

WHEREAS, the Tamil community of Michigan has made significant contributions to our state, including the preservation and promotion of the Tamil language and culture; and,

WHEREAS, Michigan Tamil community of Michigan established Tamil Schools to educate children and preserve Tamil language for generations to come; and,

WHEREAS, Tamil traditions, language, and heritage have enriched the economic, social, and cultural history of our state and nation; and,

WHEREAS, on the 14th day in the month of April, members of the Tamil community celebrate Chithirai Thirunaal, a festival that coincides with the start of the month Chithirai in the Tamil calendar; and,

WHEREAS, the State of Michigan joins in celebrating Chithirai Thirunaal and recognizes the Michigan Tamil community for their ongoing contributions to our state; 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim April 2024 as Tamil Language and Heritage Month in Michigan.
