April 21-27, 2024: Arbor Week

WHEREAS, trees play a significant role in our environment and improve our quality of life; and,

WHEREAS, trees provide oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide, allowing us to breathe clean air, provide shade, and block cold winter winds, resulting in less energy use for heating and cooling; and,

WHEREAS, spending time outdoors, among trees in our communities, forests, parks, and trails helps decrease stress and improves our physical and mental health; and,

WHEREAS, trees are sources of the materials that make up our homes and much of what is inside them, from paper products to furniture, and as such wood is an important and beautiful resource; and,

WHEREAS, in Michigan, we are home to a rich variety of trees that present us striking fall colors every year; and,

WHEREAS, we must maintain our precious woodlands, preserve our forests, and protect our natural ecosystem for future generations who will inherit the trees we plant today; and,

WHEREAS, we should appreciate trees for the roles they play in our lives by recommitting ourselves to protecting them and planting more;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim April 21 – 27, 2024, as Arbor Week, and April 26, 2024, as Arbor Day in Michigan.
