WHEREAS, public employees must uphold the United States Constitution and take an oath of office, just like elected officials do; and,
WHEREAS, many public servants, including military personnel, police officers, firefighters, corrections officers, border patrol officers, embassy employees, healthcare professionals, and many more, risk their own lives every day to keep us safe; and,
WHEREAS, public servants also include state employees, teachers, doctors, scientists, paraprofessionals, technicians, train conductors, astronauts, nurses, safety inspectors, laborers, road commission crews, computer technicians, social workers, librarians, and those in countless other occupations; and,
WHEREAS, every day, public servants provide the services people need and expect from their government; and,

WHEREAS, public servants are crucial to continuity in our democracy, especially as new elected officials take office; and,
WHEREAS, we recognize the efforts of public servants every day, but especially in May;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 2024 as Public Service Recognition Month in Michigan.
