WHEREAS, Michiganders recognize the role that swimming and aquatic activities can contribute to physical and mental health and improve quality of life; and,
WHEREAS, Michiganders understand that water safety education is crucial to prevent drownings and recreational water-related injuries; and,
WHEREAS, the National Water Safety Month Coalition develops best practices for safe swimming facilities, aquatic programs, home pools, and spas, swimming in lakes, and other related activities, ensuring people can enjoy water activities safely; and,
WHEREAS, the state of Michigan recognizes ongoing efforts to educate the public on lake, river, pool, and spa safety issues; and,
WHEREAS, Michiganders understand how important water safety rules and programs are, especially as we head into another Pure Michigan summer;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 2024 as Water Safety Month in Michigan.
