May 4, 2024: Firefighters' Day

WHEREAS, International Firefighters’ Day is observed every year on May 4th to honor firefighters who have dedicated their lives to the protection of life and property; and,

WHEREAS, firefighters selflessly devote their professional lives in service to a career protecting your communities; and,

WHEREAS, 80% of Michigan Firefighters are Volunteers and dedicate their time to communities they live in; and,

WHEREAS, whether Career or Volunteer, Michigan Firefighting comes with a physical and mental toll on these firefighters, including the potential loss of life, to protect our communities; and,

WHEREAS, we should also remember past firefighters and those who have died in the line of duty serving their communities; and,

WHEREAS, we should recognize and show gratitude to all Michigan firefighters for their bravery and sacrifice in protecting our homes, properties, and the lives of those we love; and,

WHEREAS, on this day to show our gratitude, I encourage Michiganders to make sure they have working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors in their homes; and,

WHEREAS, this day also serves as a reminder to not fight fire a house fire, and DO NOT go back in the house, let our Michigan-trained firefighters do their job;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 4, 2024, as Firefighters’ Day in Michigan.
