May 5-11, 2024: Taiwanese American Heritage Week

WHEREAS, President Clinton dedicated the week after Mother’s Day as Taiwanese American Heritage Month in 1999; and,
WHEREAS, the United States is home to more than 1,000,000 Taiwanese immigrants, making them the 23rd-largest immigrant group in the United States; and,
WHEREAS, Taiwanese Americans have contributed to Michigan’s economy and critical fields, including the auto industry, entrepreneurship, state government, science and research, technology, and more; and,
WHEREAS, organizations such as the Michigan Taiwanese American Organization and the Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce of Greater Detroit have contributed through nonprofit activities promoting cultural exchange and international commerce; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan is made stronger by the countless contributions of Taiwanese Americans across our state;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 5 – 11, 2024, as Taiwanese American Heritage Week in Michigan.
